About The Grant
This proposal stems from a USDOL grant solicitation and Executive Order 16 issued by Governor Culver. Executive Order 16 created a multi-agency Green Jobs Task Force to inventory current training and job placement activity in the Iowa’s energy sector and make recommendations for priorities in workforce training to help Iowa’s energy efficiency initiatives grow.
This project will serve businesses, dislocated workers, and underemployed Iowans with training funds for occupations as specified in the Green Jobs Act of 2007. It will also amend Iowa’s Energy Independence Plan with an Energy Sector Plan to train workers for emerging occupations in Iowa’s clean energy economy.
As required in the USDOL Solicitation for Grant Application, the Office of Energy Independence and Iowa Workforce Development have chartered a formal Energy Sector Board to guide funding awards for job training. They will prioritize funding for fast track pre-apprentice and apprenticeship activity, as well as nationally-recognized worker credentialing, for the jobs detailed in the attached table. They will issue these training funds in a manner that employs the maximum amount of Iowans and serves the growth of Iowa’s new energy economy. The Energy Sector Board consists of representatives from state government, Iowa businesses, organized labor, and the education community.
