Iowa law requires Iowa Workforce Development products and services be accessible to residents in all 99 counties of Iowa. In Dickinson County, that access is provided through a unique collaboration between IWD and Iowa State University Extension.

Dickinson County has thriving businesses and manufacturers that can benefit from IWD resources, as well as job seekers who need information on jobs, career opportunities, and help putting together a resume. IWD had up-to-date computer and software equipment, but no office to house it in the county to provide services. ISU Extension had an office and a connection to the Internet, but needed to update their computer equipment. The two pooled their resources in a venture that solved the problem in September 1999, when IWD installed a personal computer at the Dickinson County Extension office in Spirit Lake.

The first partnership of its kind in Iowa, this access point provides customers of both agencies access to the Internet’s job resources, America’s Job Bank and Smart Career Move, labor market information, word processing and spreadsheet programs with Microsoft Office, résumé making software, and a typing tutorial program. Customers are also able to file a claim for unemployment insurance and register for job placement services through an IWD Internet program. IWD pamphlets and brochures are also available. There is no charge of any of these services, which are available to both IWD and ISU customers from any county, not just Dickinson.

The Dickinson County Extension office is located at 1600 15th Street, Spirit Lake, IA 51360-2160. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. PC users should be at least 14 years of age, and should not be accompanied by small children. Use is on a first-come, first-serve basis, but availability may be limited on occasion due to ISU office space or staff needs. A printer and paper are available, also at no charge.
