Office Closing Effects Region 12

Progressive levels of reduced funding for workforce services has forced the department to close 15 offices throughout the state.  Effective June 29, 2006, services will no longer be provided in Le Mars.

“The decision to close offices was a difficult one”, indicated Regional Workforce Development Manager Todd Lee, “many of our customers will find it necessary to travel to surrounding counties for workforce services”.

Iowa Workforce Development is committed to providing quality, customer-friendly services throughout the state in the remaining 54 offices.  Additionally, the most common services such as searching and posting jobs; download required employer postings; file unemployment insurance claims; access regional information and more are available 24/7 online at www.iowaworkforce.org.

New Tools for Persons with Disabilities Available in the Sioux City Resource Center

We have recently added a new computer to the Resource Center in Sioux City programmed specifically to accommodate people with disabilities. Software applications that include WYNN Wizard with Scanning, WiViK On-screen Keyboard and ZoomText, enable customers with disabilities to fully utilize services available in the Resource Center. To further enhance usability this computer features a 20 inch flat panel monitor and is on a height adjustable work surface.

WYNN Wizard with Scanning is designed to aid individuals to read and write more effectively. It provides optical character recognition (OCR) i.e. the ability to scan a printed page and convert it into electronic text. Speech synthesis enables this scanned text to be read aloud. WYNN Wizard can scan and read word processing, text files, and the Internet. Individuals may enjoy clear, natural-sounding synthetic speech while reading standard word processing files, the Internet, ASCII text files, and scanned pages saved to disk.

WiVik On-screen Keyboard provides access for individuals who are unable to use a standard computer keyboard. All on-screen (virtual keyboard) keys work just as they would if you were typing on a standard computer keyboard. Select a key and WiViK sends it to a word processor, e-mail message, web page or other text-based application you may be using. Keyboards can contain any characters you want, and keys can be moved anywhere on the screen and can be any size.

Zoom Text enlarges, enhances and reads aloud everything on the screen. Features included complete screen reading, automatic document reading, full internet accessibility, text navigation, and typing and mouse echo.
