Jobs

IWD staff matches job seekers against the employment needs of prospective employers and makes appropriate referrals. No fees are charged. Jobs listed with IWD are posted in local offices and on several Internet sites: IowaJobs, Job Central, and Smart Career Move. Smart Career Move is a Web site listing jobs paying a minimum of $30,000 per year.  For a listing of local jobs, see the "Local Job Opportunities" site on this website.

Career and and Employment Fairs

Annual career and employment fairs in Region 12 are usually held in the spring and offer employers and job seekers the opportunity to interact at a single location. Employers are charged a minimal fee to cover advertising costs.

Unemployment

All Region 12 permanent offices take claims for unemployment insurance. In-person claims are taken in a group format by appointment. To file your claim in-person please call your nearest office to schedule an appointment. In addition, there are three other filing options.

  1. File an Unemployment Insurance Claim online  via the Internet from any connected PC
  2. Use the computers in the IWD offices to file your claim

Resource Centers

IWD has PC's available to the public at all permanent locations for use in developing résumés, exploring career options, taking typing tests, and developing skills using tutorials. Résumés will be reviewed upon request. A number of Internet-based job seeking tools are available, as well as access to employer Web sites and IWD job postings. We also have a number of brochures and pamphlets. There is no cost for any of these services. An IWD PC is also available at Ida Services, Inc. in Battle Creek and West Central Development in Onawa.

Testing and Assessment Services

Applying for a job that requires 65 words per minute typing speed? IWD staff can administer—at no charge to you—proficiency testing for typing, 10-key and data entry. Tests are administered at 9:30, 10:30, 11:30, 1:30, 2:30, and 3:30 and applicants need to be present about 5 minutes prior to the test time.  IWD has access to several tools for assisting job seekers who want to identify skills, abilities and interests for employment, including the “Choices" software program.

Reemployment Services

The Reemployment Services (RES) program is designed to assist Unemployment Insurance applicants identified as being at risk for long-term unemployment return to the workforce as quickly as possible. Identified claimants receive services in Sioux City.

Tax Credits

The Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) and Welfare-to-Work Tax Credit (WtWTC) offer employers federal income tax credit if they hire persons from certain eligibility groups such as low income persons or persons with disabilities. IWD staff can determine if you qualify for this hiring incentive.

Child Labor Forms

IWD staff issues work permits and certificates of age to employers who wish to hire young people under 18 years of age just entering the job market.

Business Closings/Downsizing

Should the company you work for experience a closing or restructuring, IWD staff and its partners are ready to help you make the transition to other employment. Laid-off workers are provided access to services including financial support and training.

Our Veterans Services Representatives coordinate all services provided to veterans including counseling, testing, and identifying training and employment opportunities.

PROMISE JOBS

PROMISE JOBS is Iowa’s program to help Family Investment Program (FIP) recipients receive job information and acquire training necessary to help participants become self-sufficient.

Iowa Advantage

This new series of workshops is available for job seekers, dislocated workers, students, and other customers interested in updating their job seeking skills, deciding on a career, going back to school, budgeting, etc. Workshop topics include:

  • Your Successful Job Search - Organizing your job search, writing resumes and cover letters and interviewing skills
  • Job and Career Options - Exploring going back to school or identifying your skills and how to apply them in a new position
  • Budgets and Finance - Reviewing your current financial situation, how to work with creditors and available community resources
  • Coping With Change - Change zones, managing stress and family concerns and dealing with stress and self-esteem issues

There is no cost to attend any of the Iowa Advantage workshops. For more information on class schedules, or to pre-register, contact your local Iowa Workforce Development office or check out the IWD on-line calendar of events.
