AARP
Administers the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) in Polk county and fourteen other Iowa counties. This is a Department of Labor program designed to provide  temporary income for lower income individuals age 55 and older.  Participants are matched to part-time work-training assignments, and receive additional job search assistance in order to achieve their long range employment goals.  Call (515) 287-1555 or e-mail for more information.

American Indian Council
Offers referral assistance, classroom training programs, work experience programs and on-the-job training  programs and services to Native  Americans/Alaskan Natives. Call (515) 281-9702, ext. #17 for more information.

Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC)
Offers educational programs leading to over 70 career  options, plus a transfer program that lets you complete the first two  years of a four-year undergraduate degree. 

Dislocated Worker Program
Administered by Iowa Employment Solutions at DMACC, a federally funded program to provide employment, training, and support  assistance to workers who have permanently lost their jobs. Of the 1,034 workers enrolled last year, 988 were placed in job retraining.  Of the 352 workers who completed retraining, 315 went on to find   employment and 23 entered an extended training program. The area  served includes Boone, Dallas, Jasper, Madison, Marion, Polk,  Story, and Warren counties. Iowa State University Extension in Polk County
A client-centered organization  that provides research-based, unbiased information and education to help people make better decisions in their personal, community, and professional lives. 

Iowa Vocational Rehabilitation
Assists eligible persons with disabilities to achieve their employment goals. Services include:

  • Medical and psychological assessment
  • Vocational evaluation
  • Counseling and guidance
  • Physical and/or mental restoration services  which may include therapy, wheelchairs, hearing aids, special  adaptive equipment or devices, job training, occupational tools,  equipment or licenses and job placement assistance. 

Job Corps
The nation's largest and most comprehensive  residential education and job training program for at-risk youth, ages 16 through 24. Job Corps is a public-private partnership,  administered by the U.S. Department of Labor.
