The Newton Workforce Development office is currently staffed by four Workforce Advisors and one Workforce Associate, and also houses a Field Auditor.  The office provides the following services:

  • Assist clients with claims for unemployment insurance. 
  • Register applicants for job search assistance.
  • Accept job orders from employers and place them on the Internet.
  • Administer proficiency testing, including WorkKeys™.
  • Assist with the Work Opportunity Tax Credit program
  • Provide services to military veterans. 
  • Conduct job seeking classes through the re-employment services program and for other community agencies, such as Salvation Army, a sheltered workshop for persons with disabilities, local schools and DMACC. 
  • Administer the PROMISE JOBS program. 
  • Maintain a modern resource center.
  • Assist local employers with various testing exercises. 
  • Work with school districts on various levels of School-to-Work issues.

We also offer Iowa Advantage, which provides Iowans in transition a series of workshops addressing their most immediate needs.  These include dealing with job loss, financial management, applying for financial aid, resume development, job search methods and tips on keeping a job in today’s environment.

Newton is a community of approximately 16,000 people located 33 miles east of Des Moines on I-80.  Newton is home to the new Iowa Speedway.  We are also the home to two major advertising novelty companies, Newton Manufacturing and The Vernon Company.  Thombert Inc., an industrial plastics company, is also located here.  Newton is the county seat of Jasper county and Newton Community School District boasts five elementary, one middle, one high school as well as one alternative high school.  There is also a DMACC polytechnic campus in Newton.  Newton is a very progressive community with beautiful parks and various recreation facilities.
