The Business and Education Center

The Business and Education Center, or BEC, is a partnership of education, government and private sector organizations who believe that preparing the future workforce is more about the synergy of a good partnership than it is about individual success.


Young adults happy and successful in a changing workplace.


To build and maintain a competent central Iowa workforce by partnering with business and education to create real-life learning environments in the workplace and classroom.

Iowa Workforce Development's Role

Iowa Workforce Development is dedicated to the concept that knowledge is power. Our intent is to promote workforce development through youth and educator linkages to business that will emphasize the power of the workplace as a learning environment. Iowa Workforce Development commits resources to enable young people to make informed career choices and be prepared for future success.

Partnering Agencies

ABI Foundation The ABI (Association of Business and Industry) Foundation's vision is to be the premier provider of programming supporting the development of a quality, educated workforce. This programming also encourages active leadership in Iowa through an appreciation of the free market economy.

DMACC DMACC (Des Moines Area Community College) and area high schools have formed a partnership to offer high school students opportunities to earn college credit while still in high school. Juniors and seniors are able to enroll and complete DMACC courses at their home high school or at DMACC

Heartland AEA:  Heartland AEA (Area Education Agency) supports children, families and educators in the improvement of student learning. Heartland is committed to improving education by supporting all learners through client-focused services, partnerships and leadership.

Iowa Economic Development Authority  The mission of Iowa Department Economic Authority is to continually improve the economic well being of all Iowans by working in focused partnerships with businesses, entrepreneurs, communities and educational entities.

Work-Based Learning Guide 2002 (PDF - 1.2 MB):  Developed in cooperation with the Iowa Association of Business and Industry (ABI) Foundation, Iowa Department of Economic Development, Iowa Workforce Development and the South Central Iowa Federation of Labor AFL-CIO; this 176 page comprehensive guide offers general guidance for students, teacher-coordinators, school administrators, employers, businesses, communities, and others involved in work-based learning experiences.
