Iowa Workforce Development Receives $4.8 Million Grant
to Implement Youth Summer Employment Program

DES MOINES – Iowa Workforce Development (IWD) received a $4.8 million grant from the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds to coordinate a youth summer employment program. The state-wide summer employment program provides Iowa youth with an opportunity to develop the essential skills needed for successful employment.

“Iowa’s young people are the workforce of the future,” said Governor Chet Culver. “This Youth Summer Employment Initiative will open doors for families statewide, and provide young men and women with the tools they need to develop workplace skills, and to build a strong and rewarding career – here in Iowa.”

The summer youth program is open to individuals 14-21, who are considered low-income and part of a family unit. A family unit includes a youth who is parenting or pregnant or living with at least one other relative. Iowa youth interested in participating in the summer employment program can access information at or contact a local workforce center directly.

“As Iowa’s economy and job opportunities continue to evolve, it’s important that our youth develop the necessary skills to succeed in the new opportunities,” stated Iowa Workforce Development Director, Elisabeth Buck.

The 2010 summer youth program focuses on finding employment opportunities in the private industry. Iowa’s youth will experience industries such as retail, healthcare, restaurants, child care, implementation dealers and others across the state.

Iowa expects to serve over 1,200 individuals with the 2010 Summer Youth Employment program. Spaces will fill up quickly throughout the state, and Iowa youth interested in the program may register online or contact their local site directly.
