Southwest Iowa ECI February Training Sessions:
“Ten Hour OSHA Safety Training Certificate Course for Construction Trades”
and “Iowa OSHA Updates and Recordkeeping”

COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA –The Southwest Iowa Employers’ Council (ECI) in conjunction with Iowa Workforce Development is offering two training sessions in February for employers who are interested in promoting safety in their workplace. The training sessions will be led by Mike Whitmore, Compliance Assistance Specialist with the Iowa Dept of Labor, Iowa Workforce Development.

Construction Trades Ten Hour OSHA Safety Training Certificate Course
February 17 & 18, 2010: Wednesday the 17th 8:00 am to 3:30 pm & Thursday the 18st 8:00 am to 11:00
Location: Bass Pro Shop Outdoor World, 2901 Bass Pro Drive, Council Bluffs, IA 51501
Cost: $25.00 per person includes program expenses, lunch & refreshments.

The SW IA ECI is offering scholarships to waive the registration fee for construction workers wanting certification to become more employable while looking for work. Contact Carol for more scholarship details. Training is approved for 10.0 General credit hours towards PHR, SPHR and GPHR recertification through the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI).Pre-registration is requested by Friday February 12th to Carol Morgan at 712-242-2131 or .

• Hazard Communications (RTK)/Health Hazards

Iowa OSHA Updates & Recordkeeping
February 18, 2010 Thursday 11:30 am to 1:30 pm
Location: Bass Pro Shop Outdoor World, 2901 Bass Pro Drive, Council Bluffs, IA 51501
Cost: No fee to attend; light lunch will be provided.

Program approved for 1.5 hours of General credit hours towards PHR, SPHR and GPHR recertification through the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI). Pre-registration is requested by Monday February 15th to Carol Morgan at (712) 242-2131 or carol.morgan@iwd.iowa.gov.

• Revisions to the Recordkeeping System
• Employees’ Responsibilities to Report Work Related Injuries and Illnesses
• Costs of Safety Violations
• Iowa OSHA Updates
• How to Avoid Citations and Penalties
• Consultation Programs with Iowa OSHA

SHARP and VPP are company recognition programs for safety and health management awarded by the Commissioner of Labor on behalf of the Governor of Iowa. Employers should note that this program is completely separate from the IOSH Enforcement staff, no citations are issued or penalties proposed, and it is confidential. Iowa Workforce Development will commit its resources to Iowa’s prosperity by working to ensure the income security, productivity, safety and health of all Iowans. One goal is to reduce the incidence of injury or illness to workers by enhancing the ability to identify and control safety and health hazards. Employers can learn about potential hazards at their worksites and improve their occupational safety and health management systems by using IOSHA’s consultation services and training opportunities.

The Southwest IA Employers’ Council is a local employer group supported by Iowa Workforce Development Region 13 including Harrison, Shelby, Pottawattamie, Mills, Cass, Freemont and Page counties, and is part of the statewide Employers’ Council of Iowa system. All businesses, including Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri employers are welcome to attend ECI events. This employers’ group addresses workforce issues, and provides both educational and networking opportunities for employers and human resource professionals.
