Southwest Iowa ECI: “Ten Hour IOSHA Safety Training Certificate Courses”

COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA – Iowa Workforce Development is committed to Iowa’s prosperity by working to ensure the income security, productivity, safety and health of all Iowans. One goal is to reduce the incidence of injury or illness to workers by enhancing the ability to identify and control safety and health hazards. Employers can learn about potential hazards at their worksites, and improve their occupational safety and health management systems by using IOSHA’s consultation services and training opportunities.

The Southwest Iowa Employers’ Council (ECI) in conjunction with Iowa Workforce Development is offering two “Ten Hour IOSHA Safety Training Certificate” sessions in January for employers interested in promoting safety in their workplace. Both of the training sessions will be led by Mike Witmore, Compliance Assistance Specialist with the Iowa Department of Labor, Iowa Workforce Development.

SHARP and VPP are company recognition programs for safety and health management awarded by the Commissioner of Labor on behalf of the Governor of Iowa. Employers should note that this program is completely separate from the IOSH Enforcement staff. No citations are issued or penalties proposed and it is confidential.

Ten Hour OSHA Safety Training Certificate Course General Industry Class:
Date: January 14 & 15, 2009
Time: Wednesday the 14th - 10 am to 4:30 pm & Thursday the 15th - 8 am to noon
Location: Iowa Western Community College, 2700 College Rd, Looft Hall, Council Bluffs
Cost: $25.00 per person includes program expenses, lunch & refreshments

Topics to be covered include:

• Introduction to OSHA standards
• Walking/Working Surfaces/Falls
• Means of Egress/Fire Protection
• Ergonomics
• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)/Welding/Hazardous Materials
• Materials Handling/Back Ergonomics
• Machine Guarding
• Electrical
• Hazard Communication
• OSHA Recordkeeping

Ten Hour OSHA Safety Training Certificate Course Construction Trades Class:
Date: January 21 and 22, 2009
Time: Wednesday the 21st10 am to 4:30 pm & Thursday the 22nd 8 am to noon
Location: Iowa Western Community College, 2700 College Rd, Looft Hall, Council Bluffs
Cost: $25.00 per person includes program expenses, lunch & refreshments

Topics to be covered include:

• Introduction to OSHA/Inspection Procedures/Safety Training and Programs
• Hazard Communications (RTK)/Health Hazards
• PPE/Fire Protective Equipment
• Tools/Welding
• Electrical
• Scaffolds/Fall Protection/Confined Space Entry
• Excavations
• Ladders and Stairs
• Concrete/Cranes

Pre-registration is requested by Friday January 9th to Carol Morgan at (712) 242-2131 or . There is a registration fee of $25 to attend which covers meeting expenses and refreshments. This program has been approved for 8.0 (General) recertification credit hours towards PHR, SPHR and GPHR recertification through the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI). A certificate of attendance will be provided at the training session.

The Southwest IA Employers’ Council is a local employer group supported by Iowa Workforce Development Region 13 including Harrison, Shelby, Pottawattamie, Mills, Cass, Freemont and Page counties, and is part of the statewide Employers’ Council of Iowa system. All businesses, including Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri employers are welcome to attend ECI events. This employers’ group addresses workforce issues, and provides both educational and networking opportunities for employers and human resource professionals.
