DES MOINES, IOWA – Regular jobless benefits paid to Iowans in February totaled $41.0 million for 47,641 unemployed workers, according to Iowa Workforce Development (IWD) analysts. This is up slightly from the $40.4 million paid to 51,993 jobless Iowans in January. A decline in manufacturing claims was countered by a gain in construction-related claims.

February 2004 benefit payments were $2.7 million below the February 2003 total of $43.7 million for 51,118 unemployed workers. Most of the decrease was in manufacturing.

Payments to jobless Iowans under the Temporary Emergency Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program continued in February. TEUC benefits totaling $2.0 million were paid to 2,832 claimants. This is down from $4.1 million in TEUC benefits paid to 5,484 jobless workers in January. This program pays up to 13 weeks of additional benefits to claimant who have exhausted their regular unemployment insurance benefits. By law, this program stopped taking new claimants in January and is scheduled to expire at the end of March 2004.

Iowa Workforce Development, in cooperation with its many partner organizations, operates 71 offices serving all 99 Iowa counties. Sixteen regional workforce centers offer a one-stop experience for accessing many programs, products and services for job seekers, employers, students, economic developers and other community stakeholders.

IWD’s core services include job placement services for individuals; worker recruitment assistance to employers; training services to low-income and disadvantaged Iowans; worker protection and safety programs (inspections, consultation and education services); unemployment insurance programs and services; information regarding choices about careers, industries, labor availability and more; workers’ compensation benefits/entitlement; and technical assistance for employers.

Services, in most instances, are provided at no charge or for a nominal charge to the customer.
