Notice to CES data users:  Beginning January 2005, the new Metropolitan Statistics Area (MSA) definitions will become standard area definitions in the CES program.  The new area definitions were released by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) in June 2003 and were updated in February and March of 2004.   Previously released CES data based on the old MSA definitions have been been moved and historical files have been built using the new definitions.

The new Iowa MSAs are:

  • Ames (Story County)
  • Cedar Rapids (Benton, Jones, and Linn County)
  • Des Moines (Dallas, Guthrie, Madison, Polk and Warren County
  • Dubuque (Dubuque County)
  • Iowa City (Johnson and Washington County)
  • Sioux City (Woodbury County, IA; Union County, SD; Dakota and Dixon County, NE)
  • Waterloo (Black Hawk, Bremer, and Grundy County)
  • Davenport (Henry, Mercy, Rock Island counties in IL, and Scott County, IA)
