PUBLIC SAFETY ALERT:  Hoistway door safety retainers have been required by ASME A17.1 since the 1992 addenda. If a hoistway door is missing this retainer, it is considered a serious safety concern and immediate corrective action should be taken. You may contact this office if further assistance is required.

PROPOSED PROCEDURAL RULE CHANGES:  The Elevator Safety Board has proposed numerous changes to the board's procedural rules.  To view the proposed changes, click here and search for ARC 8322B.

OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH COMPLIANCE:  Elevator mechanics and inspectors are covered by occupational safety and health (OSHA) standards enforced by the Iowa Division of Labor Services.  The performance of a safety test, inspection, or maintenance work in a manner inconsistent with OSHA standards is prohibited.  The Consultation and Education Bureau can provide OSHA training and compliance assistance at no cost to the employer.

 

People on an elevatorElevators, escalators and related equipment are governed by Iowa Code Chapter 89A as amended by SF318

State law requires that elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters, and related equipment comply with all applicable rules and statutes. No new installation or alteration work may begin in Iowa until the installer obtains the proper permit from the Iowa Division of Labor.  Applications for installation or alteration permits should be submitted eight weeks before work is scheduled to begin.  The permit is to be posted on the job site at the time the work begins. The equipment cannot be used until it passes inspection by a state inspector.
