Summer Program
From July 20-25, 2008, a hands-on action oriented live-in summer program for high school students will be conducted by the Iowa Association of Business and Industry (ABI) on the campus of Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. Any current high school student (9-12) during the 2007-08 school year residing in Iowa is eligible for the program. Out-of-state students are welcome, space permitting.

Students will be learning about what the future holds for them in the business world while gaining valuable skills for the future. While participating in the Business Horizons program students will develop a product with a team, make financial decisions, create a marketing plan/infomercial, prepare an investor presentation, and participate in a trade-show.

Visit to www.businesshorizonsiowa.com for more information on the program and to complete an application.

Apprenticeship Jobs and Programs
Apprenticeship connects job seekers looking to learn new skills with employers looking for qualified workers. Employers, employer associations, and joint labor-management organizations, known collectively as apprenticeship sponsors, provide apprentices with instruction that reflects industry needs. Apprentices receive paid on-the-job learning and academic instruction that equip them with the portable skill sets needed to advance in their chosen field. The result is workers with industry-driven training and employers with a competitive edge.

Information can be found for students, parents, and career advisors interested in learning more apprenticeship jobs and programs.

Iowa Safe Youth @ Work
Surveys indicate that 80% of teens in the U.S. have worked by the time they have finished high school. Each year, approximately 77,000 youth are injured on the job seriously enough to seek emergency room treatment. In fact, teens are injured at a higher rate than adult workers; every seven minutes a teen is hurt on the job.

The Iowa Youth @ Work website provides valuable information for teens, their parents and employers on how young workers can be safe on the job from their very first day. Included on the website are “train the trainer” materials on how to recognize and reduce hazards in the workplace, how to protect youth while they are on the job, preparing for emergencies, workplace violence, and learning about youth rights and responsibilities.

School To Career Videos
The Iowa Public Television (IPTV) School to Careers worksite offers information on over 140 occupations and more than 220 careers - all available in Iowa. Besides information on careers you can e-mail questions to the workers featured for each occupation and, for some of the occupations, you can watch a short video describing the work that is being done. Try out an occupation and see what you think!
