Are Iowa employers required to pay employees for sick time, vacations or holidays?
No. These are fringe benefits and payment depends on the employer's policy, past practice, or the agreement between the employer and employee. A written policy or agreement is not required.
The employer's past practices are a reflection of the company policy. Have other employees in similar circumstances been paid for holiday pay, vacation, or sick pay? If there is a written policy (handbook, contract), carefully look through it. All information on this topic may not be included in one place, such as a header like "sick pay" or “vacation pay.” If there is a section covering separation from employment (termination, discharge, quit), look there also. This type of section may also contain information about your right to these types of pay when you leave employment.
