Local Employment Dynamics (LED)
The LED Program is a partnership between the U.S.
Census Bureau and the state labor market information agencies (Iowa
Workforce Development) to develop new demographic information about the
workforce, with no added employer burden. The information is gathered
from the quarterly contribution and payroll reports submitted by
employers whose firms are covered by the Unemployment Insurance (UI)
program. These records are then merged by the U.S. Census Bureau with
Federal administrative data to provide demographic statistics for the
states’ workers and returned to the state in the form of Quarterly
Workforce Indicators in order to maintain confidentiality of employer
data.
The Quarterly Workforce Indicators (QWI) are a set of economic
statistics—including employment, job creation, wages and worker
turnover—that can be queried by geography—state, county, metro and
workforce investment areas—as well as detailed industry, gender, and age
of workers. Several types of queries can be accessed for specific
analysis, such as QWI, On the Map (origin-destination statistics),
Industry Focus, and Economic HotReports, all available on the LED
website.
