FLOOD RECOVERY TIPS

Recent flooding raises concerns about the safety of boilers, water heaters and pressure vessels in Iowa.    If any part of these objects has been submerged in water for even a brief period of time, do not operate the equipment  until a qualified professional performs appropriate maintenance and repairs.  In most cases, gas valves, controls and water heaters cannot be repaired and must be replaced after flooding.  Proper servicing can prevent serious injuries or death.

The National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors has updated its procedures on Restoring Boilers After a Flood

Boilers and pressure vessels are governed by Iowa Code Chapter 89 as amended by House File 368

Molten SteelThe Iowa Division of Labor regulates boilers and pressure vessels, including many hot water heaters.  Hot water heating boilers used exclusively for pools or spas are under the jurisdiction of the Iowa Department of Public Health.

Ten-day notice of new installations must be provided pursuant to Iowa Code Section 89.6.  Click here for a 10-day notice form.  Certain repairs and alterations must be authorized in advance by an authorized inspector.  Covered objects must be inspected by state inspectors or authorized insurance company inspectors.
